Welding Cable is a one conductor power cable with a rubber insulation for outdoor protection. It's made with 30 awg bare copper strands to make it much more flexible than electrical wire. It's mostly meant for welding leads and low voltage power supply applications. It comes in a black or red jacket and both are made to the same quality.
All power cables have their own differences created by engineers for specific reasons. You shouldn't try to use a welding cable in place of a DLO cable or Type W power cable. Welding cable is a 600 volt cable, while locomotive cable is 1000 volts and Type W is 2000 volts. DLO also has tinned copper strands and it's made much less flexible than welding cable or Type W.
There is also an industrial extra flexible welding cable made with a much tougher jacket to be dragged across the job site and run over by machinery. It's a thicker, safety orange jacket with 34 awg strands for added flexibility. You probably wouldn't need something like this for everyday use at your home or small business. This welding cable isn't made for better conductivity, it's made to take a lot of abuse in the field.
Welding cable is NOT the same as battery cable and don't let people fool you or tell you that it is. Look at the specification on both side by side. You will see that the batter cable is made with less strands which means it's less flexible. You will also see that it's made with a PVC jacket instead of a rubber jacket. Most likely your welder is outside in the garage or shed and it might drag against the concrete or tar around the outside of your home. The rubber jacket can easily withstand that and the batter cable cant. Electrical wire is also made with a PVC jacket, so I suggest you rough that wire up on concrete and see what happens. The reason people might try to fool you with this is because it's much cheaper.
We sell welding cable all day long here at WesBell and understand it well. Call and ask any questions you might have and we'll be happy to answer them for you. We stock all sizes, including the MCM gauges, all over the USA for quicker delivery. We cut any length per foot that you need so that you can minimize waste for each job. Welding cable is made up of pure copper so the pricing fluctuates every day. We do our best to hold pricing for a few days so that you can put your order together but sometimes it needs to change. We will be up front about copper at the time because it does keep steady for weeks at a time every once in awhile.
Please call with any questions you might have.
